Get-to-know-you questions are the load-bearing wall of workplace connection: they're how onboarding cohorts stop being strangers, how new managers learn their teams, and how colleagues of three years discover they grew up two towns apart. But the format has one rule that everything else depends on: depth must match trust. "What's your coffee order?" is perfect for day one and slightly insulting in year three; "what shaped who you are?" is a gift among close teammates and a hostage situation among strangers.
So this library is organized by trust level, not topic. Start at Tier 1 with any new group, and escalate only as the room earns it — the same escalation principle that anchors our full icebreakers hub.

Using these well
Three field notes. First, pairs before circles for any group over ten — answering to one person is easy, answering to a room is a performance. Second, the leader's answer is the ceiling — go one notch lighter than you think. Third, questions surface commonality but don't build bonds; for that, put the team through something together — a half-day anchor event or a chain-reaction build does in two hours what two years of coffee questions can't. Related libraries: icebreaker questions, would-you-rather questions, and games for meetings.
